Device fingerprinting: finding duplicate accounts by device

Device fingerprinting (browser fingerprinting) is identifying a device by a digital fingerprint of its browser and device parameters: model, operating system, screen, fonts, language, time zone. It recognises the device even after cookies are cleared, so it helps catch multi-accounting and bonus abuse.

How it works

A script on the website or a module in the app collects dozens of parameters: the device model and operating system, browser version, screen resolution, fonts, language, time zone and how the device renders graphics. Together they produce an identifier that barely changes from one session to the next and does not depend on cookies.

The fingerprint is checked at key steps: registration, deposit, bonus activation, withdrawal. The system shows how many accounts have already been seen on this device.

How to use it

  • Multi-accounting: for example, 5 accounts were registered from one device in a week, and each one claimed the welcome bonus. The bonuses are paused and the accounts are sent for review.
  • Bonus abuse: linked accounts bet on opposite outcomes or wager the bonus in the same pattern.
  • Affiliate fraud: dozens of registrations from one affiliate coming from just two or three devices.
  • Self-exclusion: a new account on a self-excluded player's device is checked before the first deposit.

False matches

Different people can share one fingerprint: a family with one laptop, a shared computer in student halls, an office where every computer is set up the same way and goes online through one IP. Identical phones on factory settings also produce similar fingerprints.

So a match is a reason for a review, not an automatic block. The decision is made on the combination of signals: fingerprint, payment details, address, behaviour, KYC.

Privacy and consent

Legally, a fingerprint usually counts as personal data. Whether the player's consent is needed or fraud prevention is a sufficient basis depends on the data protection law of each market. This is checked with a lawyer and set out in the privacy policy, and the fingerprint is not used for advertising.

Common mistakes

  • Blocking on a single match. A family or students in the same halls are refused with no explanation and leave with a complaint.
  • Relying on the fingerprint alone. Experienced abusers use anti-detect software to spoof their browser parameters. The fingerprint works together with payment details and behaviour.
  • Checking only at registration. The account is opened from a new device, while the bonus is wagered and withdrawn from the old one. A check is needed at every key step.
