KYC: verifying a player's identity

KYC (Know Your Customer) is the process of verifying a player's identity: an ID document, address, sometimes a selfie and the payment method. The licence requires it, usually before the first withdrawal or once deposits pass a threshold.

What is checked

  • Identity: a passport, ID card or driving licence, sometimes a selfie with the document.
  • Address: a bank statement or a utility bill.
  • Payment method: that the card or wallet belongs to the player.
  • Age and country: that the player is allowed to play in this market.

When it is requested

The licence sets this. Usually a basic check happens at registration or first deposit, and a full one before the first withdrawal or once total deposits pass a threshold. For large amounts, a source of funds check is added to KYC.

How not to lose the player

  • Ask for documents early, before the first withdrawal, not at the moment the player is waiting for their money.
  • Write in the player's language and explain that it is a licence requirement.
  • State how long the check takes and show its status in the player's account.
  • Check fast. A first withdrawal check that takes days often becomes the player's last visit.

KYC and fraud

KYC also shuts down bonus schemes: one person cannot claim a welcome bonus on five accounts. That is why no deposit bonus winnings are paid out only after verification.
