When it is requested
Thresholds are set by the licence and the operator's internal AML policy. Typical triggers: total deposits over a period above a threshold, a single large deposit, a sharp rise in stakes, a mismatch with the player's profile, payments from third-party cards.
The specific amounts differ in every market. Check the requirements of your licence and write the thresholds into a policy, so that the check does not depend on a manager's mood.
Do not confuse it with an affordability check. That one asks a different question: can the player afford this spending without harm to themselves.
How not to lose the player
- Warn in advance: before the threshold, not at the moment of withdrawal.
- Explain the reason: it is a licence requirement, not a personal suspicion of the player.
- Accept documents in a convenient format and give a timeframe for the check.
- A VIP player is handled personally by their manager. A drawn-out check before a withdrawal often turns into the last visit.
