Why RTP is not a promise
RTP is calculated over millions of rounds. In a single session a player can win many times their stake or lose the whole balance: the spread is set by the game's volatility.
Two games with the same 96% RTP behave differently. Low volatility pays often and in small amounts, high volatility pays rarely but big. For the casino this means the average result is the same, but monthly swings in hold are different.
One game can have several RTPs
Providers often release a game in several RTP configurations, for example 96%, 94% and 92%. The operator picks the version, and that directly changes hold. Check which version is enabled and what the licence requires in each specific market.
RTP and bonuses
The higher the RTP, the cheaper it is for the player to clear a bonus and the more the bonus costs the casino. For every €100 of wagering, the player loses €100 x (100% minus RTP) on average: €4 in a slot with 96% RTP, and only €1 in a game with 99% RTP.
That is why high-RTP games get a lower game weighting or are excluded from wagering. Effective RTP under wagering shows how to compare games with each other.
