Volatility: how often and how big a game pays

Volatility (variance) is a measure of how unevenly a game pays. High volatility means rare big wins and long runs without them, low volatility means frequent small wins. The RTP can be the same in both cases.

A 96% RTP in both games means the same average result over the long run. Volatility decides how that result is spread across players and sessions.

Volatility and bonuses

  • High volatility and a big stake turn a bonus into a lottery ticket: most players lose, a few cash out big. That is why you need a max bet and a max cashout.
  • Bonus cost depends on volatility just as it does on the wagering requirement. The bonus cost calculator takes it into account.

How to use it in offers

After a losing streak, it helps to offer the player a low-volatility game: they play longer on the same balance and get more small wins. Free spins on a high-volatility game more often end in zero and disappointment.
