Why a cap is needed
A player with a €100 bonus can bet it in two €50 spins on the most volatile game. Most of the time they lose, but sometimes they win big and leave with the money. The bonus turns into a lottery ticket at the casino's expense.
A bet limit makes players play longer. The more spins, the closer the result gets to the game's RTP, and the more accurate the bonus cost calculation becomes.
Types of rules
- Fixed cap: for example, €5 per spin or round.
- Percentage of the bonus: for example, 10% of the bonus amount, with the lower of the two values applying.
- A separate limit for VIPs: their usual bet is above the general limit, and a rule for everyone pushes them away. They get a higher bet limit but a tighter cap on bonus winnings.
A minimum bet is needed too
A minimum blocks the opposite strategy: hours of wagering with tiny bets on low-volatility games, where the player risks almost nothing. State both the minimum and the maximum bet in the terms of every bonus.
How to apply it
- Show the limit in the offer, not only in the general terms.
- Block bets above the limit in the interface. This is better than voiding winnings later: voiding leads to complaints and disputes.
- If you void, do it only under a clause of the terms the player saw when activating the bonus.
