How to calculate a wagering requirement
A wagering requirement says how many times a bonus has to be bet before it can be withdrawn. To get the total bets, multiply the wager base by the multiplier. The base is usually the bonus amount, sometimes the deposit plus the bonus. If a game counts only partly, divide the result by its weighting.
Next comes the number of bets: the turnover divided by the bet size. At €1 per bet, €3,500 of turnover is 3,500 spins. At 600 spins an hour that is almost 6 hours of non-stop play. This is why the time limit in the terms matters as much as the wager itself.
What x1, x10, x20, x30, x35, x40 and x50 wagering mean
An x30 wager means the bonus has to be bet 30 times: €3,000 in bets on a €100 bonus. Below is the same logic for every common multiplier. Example: €100 bonus, €1 bets, a slot with 96% RTP that counts 100%.
| Wager | Bets needed | Bets of €1 | Expected loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| x1 | €100 | 100 | €4 |
| x5 | €500 | 500 | €20 |
| x10 | €1,000 | 1,000 | €40 |
| x20 | €2,000 | 2,000 | €80 |
| x25 | €2,500 | 2,500 | €100 |
| x30 | €3,000 | 3,000 | €120 |
| x35 | €3,500 | 3,500 | €140 |
| x40 | €4,000 | 4,000 | €160 |
| x45 | €4,500 | 4,500 | €180 |
| x50 | €5,000 | 5,000 | €200 |
Expected loss is the turnover multiplied by the share the game keeps (100% minus RTP). It is a long-run average: in a single session the balance can run out much earlier or grow. The higher the wager, the bigger the turnover and the lower the chance of reaching a withdrawal.
Wager on the bonus or on deposit plus bonus
If the wager is on the bonus, the base is the bonus money only. If it is on the deposit plus the bonus, your own money is in the base too and the turnover grows. With a €100 deposit and a €100 bonus, x35 on the bonus means €3,500 in bets, while x35 on deposit plus bonus means €7,000.
So two bonuses with the same x35 can differ twofold in turnover. In the calculator, switch the base in the wagering terms block; the line under the bonus shows which amount the calculation uses.
Game weighting
Game weighting is the share of a bet that counts towards the wager. Slots usually count 100%. Table games, live casino and games with a low house edge often count only partly, for example 10-20%, or not at all. The exact table is always in the terms of the specific bonus.
Example: the wager requires €3,500 of turnover. In a slot that counts 100% that is €3,500 in bets. In roulette that counts 10% you need to bet €35,000: every €10 bet counts as €1. More on game weighting in the glossary.
Max bet, time limit and max cashout
Besides the wager, three more rules shape the wagering. Check them before accepting a bonus, because each of them can wipe out the winnings.
- Max bet. While the bonus is active, the bet is capped, for example at €5. Some casinos reject bets above the cap, others count only the cap, others void the winnings. More on the max bet rule.
- Time limit. €3,500 of turnover at €1 per bet is about 6 hours of play. With 24 hours to clear it, that is doable; with 3 hours it is not.
- Max cashout. How much can be withdrawn from the bonus after wagering, for example no more than 1x or 5x the bonus. More on max cashout.
For casino teams: what the bonus costs
The wager calculator shows the turnover and expected loss of one player who wagers to the end. The bonus cost for the casino works differently: most players never finish, some cash out early and lose the bonus, some hit the max cashout. That is why the cost of a bonus is estimated with a player behaviour model.
For that there is a separate bonus cost calculator: cost per player, a budget for a group and a Bonus Rate check. How to choose a wager for a segment is covered in the glossary entry on the wagering requirement.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate a wagering requirement?
Multiply the wager base by the multiplier: a €100 bonus with x35 needs €3,500 in bets. If the base is deposit plus bonus, multiply their sum. If the game counts less than 100%, divide the turnover by the weighting.
What does x35 wagering mean?
The bonus has to be bet 35 times before it can be withdrawn. On a €100 bonus that is €3,500 in bets, or about 3,500 spins at €1.
How do I know how much is left to wager?
Take the full turnover and subtract what already counts according to the bonus progress bar. In the calculator, enter that amount in the Already wagered field.
Do live casino and roulette bets count towards wagering?
Often only partly, for example 10-20%, or not at all. The exact weighting for each game category is in the bonus terms.
What happens if I bet more than the max bet?
It depends on the terms: the bet is rejected, only the cap counts towards wagering, or the bonus winnings are voided. The cap applies until the bonus is cleared.
Can I withdraw before the wagering is complete?
Usually a withdrawal before wagering cancels the bonus and its winnings. Your own deposit money can normally be withdrawn, but the bonus is forfeited.
