Bonus expiry: how much time to give the player

Bonus expiry (validity period) is the time a player has to activate an offer and meet the wagering requirement. If they run out of time, the bonus and any winnings from it are forfeited. The period should depend on the wagering requirement and on how often the player logs in.

Two deadlines

  • Activation: how long the offer waits for the player to claim it.
  • Wagering: how much time the player has after activation to meet the wagering requirement.
  • The offer's own end date: until when the offer is visible in the player account and in emails. For long promotions, it is better to show that the promotion is live now than to count down the days to the end: a countdown teaches players to wait for the last day.

Time matched to the wager

WagerTime to complete wagering
x4072 hours or more
x3048 hours or more
x20 and below24 hours

The more a player has to bet, the more time they need. Too short a period on a high wagering requirement turns the bonus into a promise that cannot be kept, and breeds complaints.

For inactive players

For dormant players and reactivation, the activation window is 72 hours or more: someone who has not logged in for a long time will not see the offer within a day.

Common mistakes

  • The bonus expires silently. A reminder a day before the deadline brings some players back, while a silent expiry only disappoints.
  • One period for every offer. 24 hours for x40 and 7 days for x5 are equally poor: the first is impossible, the second is needless stretching.
  • The deadline is hidden in the terms. Show it in the offer and in the player account next to the wagering progress.
