Free spins: what they cost the casino

Free spins (FS) is a bonus in the form of slot spins at a fixed bet, paid for by the casino. Winnings from them usually arrive as bonus money with a wagering requirement. The same name is also used for the free spins feature inside the game itself.

Formula and example

Face value = number of spins x spin bet100 spins at €0.20 = €20 face value. At 96% RTP the expected win is €19.20.

What they cost the casino

The expected win from the spins is close to the face value multiplied by the game's RTP. But winnings usually arrive as bonus money with a wagering requirement, and only part of them turns into real money. Without wagering, free spins cost the casino almost the full expected win.

The exact cost, taking player behaviour into account, is calculated by the bonus cost calculator in free spins mode.

How many spins and what bet

Psychology matters more than face value. 100 spins at €0.10 look more generous than 10 spins at €1, even though the face value is the same.

  • Regular players: lots of spins at a small bet. Check the game's minimum bet: not every slot offers €0.10.
  • VIP: from 50 spins at €0.50-1. What matters to them is a bet close to their usual play.

How to award them

  • All spins at once. Free spins spread over several days annoy players and get lost.
  • A game that suits the player: a slot from their favourite provider, or a similar one, available in their country.
  • All terms in the offer: the game, the spin bet, wagering on winnings, the win cap and the expiry.
