Hit frequency: how often a spin pays anything

Hit frequency (hit rate) is the share of spins that pay out any win at all. At a hit frequency of 25%, roughly every fourth spin produces a win, but it is often smaller than the stake. It is neither RTP nor volatility: hit frequency only shows how often a game pays.

Formula and example

Hit frequency = winning spins / all spins x 100%For example, at a 25% hit frequency, about 250 out of 1,000 spins produce a win and the other 750 pay nothing.

A win does not mean a profit. On a €1 stake a spin pays €0.40: for hit frequency that counts as a win, but the player has lost €0.60. The game celebrates while the balance goes down, which is why such a win is called a loss disguised as a win (LDW).

Hit frequency, RTP and volatility

MetricWhat it shows
RTPhow much of the stakes the game returns on average
Volatilityhow unevenly the wins are spread
Hit frequencyhow often a spin pays anything at all

Two games with a 96% RTP and a 30% hit frequency can behave differently: one pays mostly small amounts, the other saves up for a rare big win. Low hit frequency usually goes hand in hand with high volatility, but that is not a rule.

Hit frequency and bonuses

While a player works through the wagering requirement, a high hit frequency keeps the balance steadier: frequent small wins keep the player in the game for longer. A low hit frequency brings long runs of empty spins, and most players lose the bonus quickly. Effective RTP compares the cost of wagering across games.

The same goes for free spins: out of 50 spins, about 10 produce a win at a 20% hit frequency, and about 20 at 40%. At the same RTP, the second game feels more generous.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a game that hits often is generous. A high hit frequency does not mean the game pays more: it may often pay less than the stake.
  • Promising a win on every third spin. Promo copy like this misleads the player: many of those wins are smaller than the stake.
  • Free spins on a game with rare wins. A newcomer gets empty spins and leaves disappointed. For first offers, pick games with a higher hit frequency.
