Formula and example
Each account is given a factor, which is adjusted based on its betting history: down for those who beat the line, up for big recreational players. Market limits themselves differ too: they are lower on niche leagues and in-play.
Who gets limited and why
- Sharp bettors: they consistently get a better price than the closing one, which means a positive CLV over hundreds of bets.
- Arbitrage bettors: they bet only against a price that has lagged behind the market.
- Bonus abusers and syndicates: opposite bets from linked accounts, identical bet slips within the same minute.
The reason is economic: the bookmaker margin is built for players who lose on average, while these players win on average. The other route is to treat their bets as a signal and move the price at once, but that needs strong odds trading.
How to do it transparently
- A clause in the rules: the bookmaker has the right to change the limits of an individual account.
- The limit is shown on the bet slip before the bet is placed, not after a rejection.
- Accepted bets are settled in full, and the new limit applies only to future ones.
- A check against the licence: in some markets the bookmaker must accept bets up to a set amount and cannot limit below it.
Bet limiting vs responsible gambling limits
Bet limiting protects the business from a player with an edge. Responsible gambling limits, such as a deposit limit, protect the player from harm: the player sets them, or the operator does based on risk signals. These are separate processes with different reasons, and they are never mixed up when talking to the player.
Common mistakes
- Limiting after one big win. That is punishing luck, not managing risk. The decision is based on CLV and the betting history.
- A €0.50 limit instead of a straight answer. On paper the account is open, in practice it is closed. If you are not prepared to take the player's bets, it is fairer to say so plainly and pay out the balance.
- Passing off bet limiting as care. A player limited for winning is not sent a responsible gambling message. And a player showing markers of harm needs a review and protection tools, not just a lower stake.
