Time-out: a short break chosen by the player

A time-out (cooling-off period) is a short break from gambling that players impose on themselves for a period they choose, for example from 24 hours to 6 weeks. The account is closed for play and deposits, marketing is stopped, and the break cannot be lifted early.

How it works

The player chooses the period in their account, for example 24 hours, a week, a month or 6 weeks, and the break starts at once. The licence sets the range of periods. A time-out is one of the basic responsible gambling tools: it lets the player cool off after a rough session or a big loss. It works best when the button is available both in the account and in the reality check pop-up.

A time-out cannot be lifted before the period endsFor example, a player set a 7-day break on Friday at 23:00. On Wednesday they write in chat asking to have the account reopened: support refuses, and access returns only the following Friday at 23:00.

How it differs from self-exclusion

If the player asks for a longer break than a time-out allows, they are offered self-exclusion.

What the operator does

  • Blocks play and deposits for the whole period. The licence sets how the remaining balance can be withdrawn.
  • Stops marketing: emails, push notifications, SMS, calls and bonuses in every channel. Service messages, such as withdrawal status updates, still go out.
  • Checks the exclusion before every send, including triggers: an abandoned deposit email or an expiring bonus reminder is marketing too.
  • Watches for repeats: one time-out after another is a marker of harm and a reason for contact, limits or a conversation about self-exclusion.

Common mistakes

  • Lifting it early. The player asks in chat an hour later, and support goes along with it. A break only protects the player if it cannot be cancelled in the heat of the moment.
  • Treating the break as churn. The player chose not to play. They are not included in reactivation, and no "we miss you" email with a bonus goes out on the day the break ends.
  • Hiding the button. The time-out can only be set through support or is buried deep in the settings. It is needed at the very moment the player wants to stop.
