Sportsbook: how a sports betting product works

A sportsbook (sports betting platform) is the product for betting on sport: the pre-match and in-play line, odds with a margin, trading, limits and bet settlement. Revenue is the hold on betting turnover, and it depends on the calendar and match results far more than in a casino.

Key parts

  • The line: events and markets with odds, before the match (pre-match) and during play (in-play). Every price has a margin built in.
  • Odds trading: models and traders move prices in response to news and player money, and suspend markets at dangerous moments.
  • Risk management: maximum stake and payout per market, bet limits per player, spotting professional bettors.
  • Bet settlement: based on official results, with rules for postponed and cancelled matches.

Economics and how it differs from casino

GGR = turnover x holdFor example, €2,000,000 was staked in a month at 8% hold: GGR is €160,000. If the favourites that most bettors back won all month, hold can fall to 3% and GGR to €60,000.

CRM for sports bettors

  • Segments by sport, league, team and bet type: pre-match, in-play, accumulators.
  • Calendar triggers: the day before the player's favourite team plays, the start of a round, the opening of a tournament.
  • Offers: free bets with minimum odds, boosts, acca insurance. Cross-sell into casino only when the player shows interest.
  • Exclusions: self-excluded players, players with limits and players showing risk markers, such as stakes rising after losses, get no offers.

Common mistakes

  • Judging the month by hold. A round that goes well for players pulls hold down even with the same line. Look at hold over a quarter and at margin by market.
  • Copying casino mechanics. Players almost never clear an x40 wagering requirement on sport, and without minimum odds they clear the bonus on outcomes like 1.05.
  • Not preparing for the off-season. Without the top leagues, bettors go quiet. Campaigns for other leagues and sports are prepared in advance, not once activity has already dropped.
