Onboarding: a player's first days in the product

Onboarding (welcome journey) is the work of the first hours and days after registration: helping the player make a first deposit, explaining the offer, finding games they like and getting verification done early. Whether a second deposit follows depends on onboarding.

The first hours

  • Registered, no deposit: the first message within the first hours. Help with payment and a reminder of the offer, not a week later.
  • Abandoned deposit: a message within half an hour, tailored to the decline reason.
  • A clear offer: all welcome bonus terms before the deposit, with no small print.

The first days

  • Games they like: a lobby and emails with games similar to the ones the player launched first.
  • Documents in advance: ask for KYC before the first withdrawal, in the player's language and with the review time stated.
  • A reason to come back in the first 2-3 days: a tournament, a mission, free spins on a favourite slot, the next step of the welcome package.
  • A fast first withdrawal. A stuck withdrawal often becomes the last visit.

How to measure

Conversion to first deposit within 24 hours and 7 days, time to first deposit, the share of second deposits within 7 days and the share of first withdrawals paid without delay. Test every onboarding change against a control group.

Common mistakes

  • Five emails on day one. Frequency goes up, deposits do not. One precise message triggered by an event works.
  • Asking for documents at withdrawal. The player is waiting for money and gets a check that takes several days.
  • The same lobby for everyone. A newcomer cannot find their games and leaves after the first session.
