Cashback: part of the losses paid back

Cashback is the return of a percentage of a player's losses over a period, paid as cash or as a bonus with a low wagering requirement. It is usually calculated on bets minus wins, less often on deposits minus withdrawals.

Formula and example

Cashback = percentage x (bets minus wins)Over a week, bets are €5,000 and wins €4,200, a loss of €800. 10% cashback = €80.

What to calculate it on

The usual base is real-money bets minus wins over the period. The alternative is deposits minus withdrawals. It is simpler, but it also pays out on money that is still sitting on the balance and has not been lost.

In the terms, state the base, the period and what is excluded: bets with bonus money, cancelled bets, specific games.

What it costs the casino

Cashback paid as cash or with a low wagering requirement almost all turns into real money, so its cost is close to the amount credited. 10% of losses is about 10% of the player's GGR.

Count cashback in Bonus Rate together with all other bonuses. For big players cashback is often cheaper than deposit bonuses: it is easy to calculate, and it carries no risk of a big win on bonus money.

How to present it

  • Say it plainly: 10% cashback. No "up to 10%": players do not like guessing how much they will get.
  • Banners do not use the word "loss": they say "cashback" or "money back".
  • Show when it is credited and how much has already built up: that way cashback works as a reason to come back.
